How to Protect Babies from SIDS
Parents want to do everything possible to protect their children and SIDS is certainly a cause for concern among new parents. SIDS affects 1 out of every 1000 babies and is the leading cause of death in babies one month to one year old. The following suggestions are ways to protect your baby from SIDS.Back to Sleep
Always put your baby on his back to go to sleep. Never place baby on his belly or side, even if that position appears more comfortable. Babies have a higher chance of re-breathing the air they exhaled in these positions, making it difficult to get enough oxygen. Baby sleeping on his back is the safest way to sleep and protect your baby from SIDS. You will also want to Keep blankets and pillows out of your baby's crib. These items could fall on your infant and suffocate them.
Cool Temperatures
Many parents instinctively want to bundle their baby up, but it is recommended to keep baby in a room that is between 60 and 70 degrees Fahrenheit. Overheating could be a risk factor in SIDS so make sure baby is comfortable and not too hot. Whatever you are wearing and are comfortable in should be enough to keep your little one comfortable too.
No Smoke
Do not smoke around your baby. Babies who breathe second hand smoke are more likely to die of SIDS than other babies. It's not recommended to smoke around babies or children and pregnant women should not smoke either as this can increase the risk of SIDS, too.
Well Baby Checkups
Another way to protect your baby is to visit the pediatrician for well baby checkups. Babies visit the pediatrician on a regular basis the first weeks and months of their lives, but this tapers off as they get older. Any problems or concerns may be discussed at these checkups to help keep your baby safe.
